AJHS Summer FAQ for 2019-20

Parents/Guardians,

I want to thank you for all of your effort during the 2019-20 School year. To say that we had an eventful year would be an understatement. I want you to know that we appreciate all that you have persevered and the support you have offered your students and families to make it through this school year. We are extremely grateful for your efforts!

Please know that, as a staff, we feel as though we missed out on the opportunity to end the school year with your students, the way we typically do. However, we also want you to know that we value every moment we were able to spend with them here at AJHS.

Sincerely,
Mr. Moran

Please find and review the most current information re: AJHS and Summer!

What does a No Credit (NC) grade mean? At this time, it means that your student did not earn a 70% in a particular class, during Distance Learning. If your student is in the 8th grade, this information will be shared with the High School and could be used as a mechanism to “trigger” support during summer and or at the beginning of the school year. It might also act as a “trigger” for support and contact from the PVUSD Student Services Department and possible enrollment in a summer program; if desired. If your student is in the 7th grade it will mean that we will be working to monitor and support your student in the coming year. It might also act as a “trigger” for support and contact from the PVUSD Student Services Department and possible enrollment in a summer program; if desired. We are currently in the process of working through the logistics to determine which programs we will be able to offer as a school and as a district.

Promotion certificates: We will begin mailing Promotion Certificates home starting Thursday, June 18th.

Yearbooks: We are currently sold out of the 2019-20 AJHS Yearbook. Yearbooks will be picked up from the school site.  The date is to be determined.

Community Log #10

6/3/20

Greetings Sea Dragons,

Although it  has only been a few days since my last communication I wanted to make sure I provided information regarding the following items

  1. Pickup of Personal Items and Delivery of School Property Final Day (make-up day) Thursday, June 4th from 3:00 to 6: 00 pm.
  2. Yearbook
  3. Summer School
  4. Chromebooks

  1. Pickup of Personal Items and Delivery of School Property June 4th 2020. This is the final day to drop off books and to pick up items from the locker room. As a reminder this event is for students (adults must wait in vehicles) to return to AJHS to pick up any contents they might have in their PE and School Lockers. We want to thank you all for your patience regarding this matter. Additionally, students will be asked to return all textbooks, library books, and instruments to AJHS on that very same day.

Time and Date:

Thursday, June 4th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm (this is the only time slot)

Pick-up Process or Instruction:

Students will get out their cars, put on their masks, exit the car (with their items in a persona lbag) and leave their parents behind. Parents must remain in their vehicles. Students will then line up, 6 feet apart from one another, on the track (track will be marked.) The students will then be released one by one through the blue doors to access the gym via the black top.  They will then drop off their library/textbooks and then proceed to the locker room (one by one or in very small groups.)  The AJHS PE staff will be in the locker room to assist students and to monitor social distancing. Once students have removed all items from their locker and have placed their items into their personal bag, they will then proceed to their school locker to get items out of there.  Teacher volunteers will be present to help supervise.  They can also pick up their art supplies from room 2 during that time.  If they have books in their locker that they need to return, they should proceed to their student locker first.

  1. Again, all students will all be required to wear a mask and remain 6 feet apart at all times.  All students must bring their own bag to take their stuff home in.  If 8th graders would like to donate their PE clothes, there will be a place to leave them in the locker room. We want to thank you all for your attention to this important process!

  1. We have not yet been able to secure a delivery date for our yearbooks. Once they are delivered here we will schedule a pick-up for students. It will be run in a manner similar to the Pick-up of personal items to ensure the safety of our students, families, and staff. I will communicate this information to all families as soon as it is available.

  1. The PVUSD Extended Learning Program will be contacting current 7th grade students/ families with information about summer school once the 4th quarter has officially come to an end. As a reminder, the end of the 4th Quarter is scheduled for Friday, June 5th. All school work is due on Friday June 5th, unless other arrangements have been made with individual instructors for individual students for specific reasons.

  1. All 8th grade students transitioning to a PVUSD High School will keep their Chromebooks, chargers, and hot spots (if applicable) through the summer. They will need them for next year. If your current 8th grade student is planning to attend a school outside of the Pajaro Valley Unified School district, they should return the Chromebook, charger, and hotspot (if applicable) to the PVUSD District Office located at 294 Green Valley Road, Watsonville, CA 95076. All 7th grade students returning to AJHS or another PVUSD school should also keep their Chromebook, charger, and hotspot (if applicable.)

Thank you again for your effort and continued support.
Respectfully,

Rich Moran (Principal, Distance Learner, Parent)

PVUSD Hold Harmless Grading Policy: Please use the link to see the document. As a reminder all students will be receiving either Credit or No Credit Grades. Synergy, our student information system (sis) has been set to “convert” letter grades to either a Credit or No Credit. You will still be able to see the Percentage your student has earned. AJHS staff are monitoring and will continue to make adjustments through the end of the grading period. All work is due Friday June 5th.

Please know that much consideration and input from students, staff, and administrators went into the construction of this policy. Also, please know that it was meant to address ( consider the circumstances of) all learners, and all families; a challenging target to hit  with one single policy in the midst of such a monumental shift.

Report Cards: Sea Dragon Families, 4th Quarter Report Cards will be finalized by June 16th. We will do our best to get cars out to families by June 22nd.

Summer Activities: Sea Dragon families, this has been a challenging time. Our collective efforts to accommodate monumental shifts in nearly every aspect of our lives has been both maddening and inspiring. As a result, AJHS has been unable to conduct a number of our student recognition events. Sooo, we will be working diligently this summer to do our best to recognize both 7th and 8th grade students for the following…

  1. Honor Roll (Q2 and Q3)
  2. ROAR (This will be an abridged version)
  3. ROV

Reminders:

Promotion Ceremony: We have been given permission to construct a Promotion Ceremony. We have very recently learned that this ceremony, unlike our High Schools, cannot include a “drive-thru” celebration or any type of physical gathering. Therefore it must be a virtual Ceremony or Presentation. We are in the process of planning for the ceremony.

The”Promotion Ceremony will be “aired” on Monday, June 8th at 5:30 pm. This time slot will allow for the comprehensive and alternative high schools to conduct their ceremonies and will allow time for most of our students and families to be at home to view the presentation. The presentation will be linked on the AJHS website homepage and the link will be sent to you all via email.

The link is:  https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/

The yearbook ID code is: 13431720

Act Now! Only 30 books left!

Last day to order is 6/12/20

We will need to plan for yearbook distribution in late June or early July depending on the delivery date.

Older News:

Communication to AJHS staff: We want to thank our students and caregivers for your emailing AJHS staff directly using our first_last@pvusd.net with questions. Please see the link to the Staff Directory on the AJHS homepage or use the link provided here.  Teachers can see messages faster and respond more quickly if contacted in this manner. This has been extremely helpful!

PBIS at AJHS is continuing! While our format and venues have changed, the outstanding effort of our students has not, so the AJHS staff has banded together to recognize a group of students each week for their tremendous effort during distance learning. If your child is recognized, they will receive a gift card in the mail to a local business as a token of our appreciation. Please use your discretion as to whether or not you feel comfortable venturing out, but we do recognize how difficult this has been on our community and we want to promote and support our local businesses whenever possible. And most importantly, we are so proud of and encouraged by how our Sea Dragons have responded to this abnormal turn in their lives. Keep it up Sea Dragons!

Thank you again for your effort and continued support.
Respectfully,

Rich Moran (Principal, Distance Learner, Parent)

What do students need to do to prepare for the Promotion Presentation/Ceremony?

At this point 8th grade students have only two jobs.

  1. Continue to participate in distance learning giving their best effort.
  2. With help from their parents/guardians students can (if they wish) take a photo that will replace their school photo in the Promotion Presentation. Photos are due by Friday, May 22nd.

What do parents/guardians  need to do?

  1. Continue your phenomenal efforts supporting your students while Distance Learning.
  2. Help students with personal photos and send the photo to DeAnn Najera@Pvusd.net  Photos are due by Friday, May 22nd.
  3. Order Yard Signs (if you wish.)

Parent Survey:

Good Day PVUSD Community,

We hope this email finds you well.  Our district is committed to the health, well-being and education of our students.  A survey has been developed to find out more information on how our staff, students and families are doing during this unprecedented time so that we can adjust supports where necessary.  We would greatly appreciate if you could take a moment to complete the Parent Support Check-In.  If you have a child in middle or high school, they will be receiving a separate survey.  All responses are anonymous.  As an incentive, the grade level at each school with the most responses will earn a prize.  Thank you for your time and consideration. https://forms.gle/stYC88SssZmAsqjU9
